Can we talk about how overrated truffle oil is?

I was at a dinner party last Saturday and my friend poured truffle oil over a pasta dish she spent 2 hours on. I took one bite and it just tasted like that fake earthy chemical flavor. I get that people think it's fancy but it's literally just a synthetic compound called 2,4-dithiapentane. Has anyone else noticed restaurants using it as a crutch to make basic food seem gourmet?

Man, that fake earthy chemical taste is exactly it... feels like you're eating a candle. Is there any dish that actually benefits from truffle oil, or is it pretty much just a scam across the board?

Just skip truffle oil and get truffle salt instead. A tiny pinch on scrambled eggs or popcorn actually tastes like the real thing and doesn't have that chemical gas station vibe.

Cracked open a bottle of truffle oil once thinking I was about to elevate some fries - ended up smelling like a burnt tire that fell in a vat of perfume. The popcorn idea is genius though, I'd rather risk my own shaky salt pour than deal with that artificial nonsense again. Call me a truffle traitor but at least my kitchen doesn't smell like a tragedy anymore.
