Can we talk about how fast retinol actually goes bad on a hot shelf?

I keep my retinol in my treatment room cabinet and last month a client pointed out it smelled weird. Checked the bottle and I bought it 4 months ago but the shelf gets direct afternoon sun through the window. Never thought about it before. Now I keep everything in a mini fridge I got for $40 off Facebook Marketplace. Has anyone else ruined product just by storing it wrong?

The mini fridge idea is actually genius, I did the same thing after I left my vitamin C serum on the bathroom counter for two weeks and it turned dark orange. I didn't even think about how the heat from the sun could mess with my retinol until I noticed it started to smell like old play dough. Now I keep all my active stuff in a little fridge I got for $30 at a garage sale, and everything stays good way longer. It makes a huge difference, especially in summer when my apartment gets stuffy. I also started writing the date I opened each product with a sharpie right on the bottle so I know exactly how old it is.

It's funny how once you start paying attention to one thing you see the same kind of neglect everywhere in your life.

God that's so true, it's like your whole life comes into focus all at once.
