My simple trick for chatting with locals in new places

I learn basic greetings from an app. It always leads to good tips and smiles.

Yeah but the key is to learn why the greeting matters, not just the words. Ask a shopkeeper how to say "thank you" properly and you get a real connection, not a canned moment. That genuine effort cuts through the tourist vibe every time.

Isn't that just performing for tips? Most locals can spot a tourist reciting phrases from an app a mile away. It feels fake, like you're treating their language like a party trick instead of actually trying to connect. You might get a polite smile, but it often comes across as patronizing, not respectful.

Oh, the "polite smile" is the universal sign for "your accent is so bad it physically hurts me." If you're gonna use phrases from an app, at least commit to the bit and really butcher the pronunciation. That's how you make it a real party trick.
