Just realized I might be doing the whole 'home base' thing wrong

Honestly, I was talking to another nomad in Lisbon last week who's been at this for 8 years. He said he stopped renting a permanent apartment back home 4 years ago and just fully commits to 3-6 month stays. He argued the $1,200 a month he was wasting on an empty place was a 'safety net tax' that actually held him back from finding better deals abroad. Ngl, it hit different because I'm currently paying for a storage unit and a cheap room in my hometown 'just in case,' and that's nearly $500 a month I never use. It made me wonder if that mental crutch is worth the cost. Do you guys keep a physical home base, or have you cut that cord completely?

That "safety net tax" line really got me. I did the same thing for two years, paying for a storage locker and my buddy's spare room. Letting it go was scary, but it forced me to find cheaper long term stays abroad. That money now buys me an extra month of travel every year. The crutch was expensive and I never actually needed it.

Totally get that feeling. I held onto a storage unit for way too long because the idea of not having that stuff scared me. Letting go felt like a huge risk, but honestly, it was just dead money for a backup plan I never used. That mental crutch is real, and paying for it every month starts to feel silly. Freeing up that cash completely changed how I could travel.
