Just realized I chose a $900 flight to Medellin over a $600 one to Mexico City because of the visa rules

Wait, you mean you don't need a visa for Colombia? I always thought you did. That's actually a huge deal. I used to just pick the cheapest flight, but @claire_walker made me look it up and she's right, it's just a tourist card you get on arrival. Mexico is the same for US passports. So maybe the real reason was the layover being easier. Makes you check the fine print before booking now.

Wait, don't you need a visa for Colombia too if you're from the US? I thought it was the same tourist entry for both. Maybe the layover rules were different?

Totally thought the same thing for years. I used to avoid Colombia flights because I assumed the visa process was a pain. But yeah, after seeing what @milestaylor posted, I looked it up and it's just that tourist card on arrival, same as Mexico. Makes the layover thing the only real difference.
