Overheard a guy at the networking event say his email open rate jumped 40% after he stopped using images entirely

He said he switched to plain text emails for his B2B list and his click-through rate actually went up too, has anyone else tried this and seen similar numbers?

Wait, so your click-through rate went up because you stripped out all the pretty pictures?

Pretty pictures were just getting in the way, I guess. People were too busy staring at the fancy photos to actually click anything. Turned the whole thing into a plain text list with a single button and now it looks like a ransom note but hey the numbers doubled. Sometimes ugly works better than pretty when you're selling stuff online.

Idk, I've had this happen before too. You have to think about what people actually do when they land on a page - they scan, they don't read. Too many images just give them a reason to look away from the call to action. Maybe try keeping one small image that shows the product in use, but put it below the button. That way you get the best of both worlds without distracting from the click.
