Dropped $2,400 on a paid search audit and it found one broken form field
Look, I run a small agency and I got lazy earlier this year. I hired a big name consultant to audit my biggest client's paid search account, mostly so I could tell the client we brought in an outside expert. Invoice was $2,400 for a six page deck and a call. Three weeks later our conversion rate on the main landing page was sitting at 0.4% and I could not figure out why. The audit deck never caught it, but my intern did: the phone number field on the form was set to reject anything with dashes, so every lead typed in with dashes bounced. That one field was eating roughly nine grand a month in ad spend that never turned into a call. I fixed it in ten minutes and we were back to a 3.1% conversion rate by the next week. I am not saying never hire outside help, but I am saying nobody cares about your account like the person paying the ad bill. Has anyone else paid good money for an audit that missed something a junior person caught in a day?
Had the same thing happen at my last shop, we paid a guy $1,800 to review a Google Ads account for a dental client. He sent back a 20 page doc with stuff like "consider testing ad copy" and "review your audience list." Meanwhile the actual problem was the booking page loaded in 6 seconds on mobile because someone dropped a random tracking pixel in there. Our office manager found it when she tried to book her own cleaning on her phone. That pixel had been killing us for two months, like $7k in wasted clicks. The fancy deck never even opened the landing page.
