Conversion rate vs. traffic: which one are you actually optimizing for?

I keep seeing posts where people brag about driving 50,000 visitors to a page but their conversion rate is under 1%. I think too many folks focus on getting eyeballs instead of getting clicks. I ran a campaign last month for a small ecommerce brand where we cut traffic by half but doubled revenue by targeting better. The client was nervous at first because the traffic number looked smaller. But the numbers dont lie if you track the right stuff. So which metric do you prioritize when your boss or client asks for results? Is it worth having more visitors if they dont actually buy?

Traffic is a vanity number that clients actually understand though lmao. Sure you can show them a better ROI but good luck explaining why less people seeing their site is somehow a win to someone who just wants big charts.

Honestly I get what you're saying but I think there's a middle ground here. Most clients I've worked with actually get excited when you break down how 500 targeted visitors brought 20 leads instead of 10000 random clicks that bounced in 3 seconds.

Right?! That's exactly what I've seen too @lindab49. Had a client last month who was obsessed with pageviews until I showed them their bounce rate was 90% on that traffic. Switched to 300 qualified leads from a niche list. They got 25 actual calls. Lightbulb moment for sure. Quality over quantity every damn time.
