A client's Google Ads mistake taught me more than any course did

Last month in Chicago, a client showed me their campaign. They were paying $4.50 per click on a broad match keyword. Conversion rate was 0.2%. I dug into their search terms report. Found 90% of clicks were irrelevant junk. Switched them to phrase match and added 40 negative keywords. Cost per lead dropped to $1.80 in two weeks. Has anyone else found that cleaning up search terms beats any fancy bidding strategy?

Huh, did they even look at their search terms before you stepped in?
