A client in Denver told me my email subject lines were 'too clever' and it tanked my open rate.

I switched to just stating the offer clearly, like 'Your 20% Off Coupon Inside', and my opens jumped from 12% to 34% in a month, so has anyone else been told their marketing is trying too hard?

My band's clever name kept us out of gigs.

The drummer in my first band back in 2003 thought he was being clever calling us "The Sunday Hangovers" for a Christian youth group gig. We showed up and the pastor took one look at the name on our gear and told us to pack up before we even set up a single mic stand. It's funny how something as simple as a name can close doors before anyone even hears what you sound like. I've noticed this pattern everywhere now, not just with bands but with businesses and even people's online usernames. People judge things based on labels first and the actual content second, which is kind of a bummer when you think about it.
