Unpopular opinion: writing 7 prompts in one sitting on a Saturday ruined my whole story idea, and I finally know why
Two Saturdays ago I sat down at my kitchen table in Boise with a fresh notebook and cranked out 7 story prompts before lunch. I felt like a machine. By Sunday night every single one felt dead. The problem was they all had the same shape, a quiet person finds an old object, remembers something, stares out a window. Same rhythm, 7 times in a row. A friend who teaches 8th grade English read them and said they sounded like one prompt photocopied. She was right. I had been chasing volume instead of letting one weird idea breathe. So now I sit on a prompt for a day or two before I write the next one. It feels slower but the ideas are way less alike. For people who write prompts in batches, how do you keep them from turning into the same story over and over?
