Tried a 500-word prompt with zero dialogue and my scene died

Last month I entered a local writing circle challenge that banned all dialogue for 500 words. Thought I could nail a tense kitchen argument without quotes, but it came out flat as a pancake. The judge at the Tacoma library said my characters felt like mannequins. Has anyone else found a way to write action-only scenes without losing the human feel, or is dialogue just non-negotiable?

The judge had a point, but the fix is picking one tiny physical detail and letting it carry ten lines of weight, like a cracked knuckle or a cup left unwashed. I had a scene once with zero quotes and it only worked when I treated every object like it was screaming something the characters wouldn't say out loud.

Forty seven percent of what we say in a day is just filler, I heard that once, and it kind of stuck with me. That’s why @king.andrew is onto something with the objects carrying weight, because people mostly avoid saying what they mean, we circle around it. The real trick I’ve found is that silence in real life is never empty, it’s full of all the stuff nobody’s saying out loud, and a scene works the same way. A cracked knuckle or a dirty spoon can do more than a paragraph of yelling if you let it sit there long enough. Your judge probably wanted to feel that tension, not just see it, and that takes trusting your reader to fill in the blanks.
