Threw a 'villain wins' prompt at my writing group and got nothing but sunshine stories back

I asked for stories where the bad guy achieves their goal completely, but everyone wrote tales where the villain turns good or gets defeated at the last second. Has anyone else noticed writing prompts about dark endings usually get softened up?

This pattern shows up everywhere, not just in writing groups. People avoid looking at what happens when things actually fall apart. Watch how folks talk about a business closing down - they always say "it was for the best" or "new opportunities waiting" instead of admitting some endings are just plain rotten. Same with relationships that go sour. Everyone wants to find the silver lining when sometimes there isn't one. The world has gotten scared of sitting with discomfort, so even fiction has to wrap things up with a lesson about redemption.

Aren't people afraid to truly explore what happens when the bad guy actually wins?
