The big debate: should fantasy magic systems have hard rules or be more mysterious?

I've noticed a lot of writing prompts lately where magic is basically just a cheat code with no limits. But then I see other posts where people get super specific about mana costs and spell slots. I was reading a prompt about a wizard who can only cast spells at midnight, and another where the magic just works whenever the plot needs it. Which approach actually makes for better stories? Because I've tried both in my own writing and my readers seem split down the middle on what feels more real. What do you guys think - should magic follow strict rules or stay loose and weird?

Oh man, hard rules all the way lol. If magic can do anything whenever, it kills all the tension for me. A wizard who has to plan around their limits makes for way better story stakes.

Hang on @the_ray you got me thinking but I think hard rules can also kill tension if they're too rigid. Like realistic limits are good but too many numbers and people start doing magic math instead of feeling the story.
