PSA: I keep seeing prompts where the 'twist' is just the main character waking up from a dream.
I've been in three different writing groups this year and every single one had at least two people submit stories with that exact ending. It feels like a cop-out that kills all the stakes. What's a better way to write a surprise ending that actually means something?

What kind of stories are these, like is it always horror or adventure? I wonder if the problem is they're trying to force a twist where the story would be stronger with a real ending that follows through.

That last horror movie I saw definitely suffered from a forced, pointless twist.
