Overheard a guy at the library talking about his novel's magic system for 20 minutes straight
He said his magic only works if the user is barefoot on natural ground, which made me wonder why wizards in stories never just wear sandals. Has anyone else ever built a whole story around one weird rule that came from a random real-world observation?

My friend Sarah actually kicked her flip flops off mid-argument about this, @the_ryan, and she's not even a writer.

Oh man, that barefoot rule is actually kind of brilliant though. It's one of those simple limitations that immediately makes you picture the wizard frantically kicking off their boots in the middle of a fight, which is way more interesting than just waving a wand. I really respect when someone takes a tiny weird observation like that and actually builds a whole world around it, because most people would just laugh and move on. Honestly, those little grounded rules are what make magic feel real instead of just being a cheat code for the plot.
