Noticed a weird pattern at the writer's meetup in Portland last month

I showed up to a local creative writing group at a bookstore downtown, and every single prompt they handed out was about betrayal or loss. Not a single one about joy, adventure, or even something as simple as finding a lost cat. Has anyone else seen writing prompts get stuck on one mood like this?

And it sounds like maybe there's one person in that group who's really going through something and keeps steering things that way, or the organizer just got stuck on a theme and rolled with it. Groups can kind of develop their own mood for a while before someone snaps them out of it.

Guess I see it more as just a phase the whole group goes through together, not one person's fault.

Whoa, hold up. Did you say EVERY prompt was about betrayal or loss? Like not even one that was just about, I don't know, someone winning the lottery? That's wild to me. I mean, sure, a group can get into a mood, but that feels less like a phase and more like someone's running a secret therapy session disguised as a writing meetup. I'd be side-eyeing the organizer so hard, wondering if they just went through a really bad breakup and forgot to tell anyone else.
