My brother told me to write about the worst day of my life
We were talking about writer's block and he said, 'Just describe the worst day you ever had, but make it happen to a character who is nothing like you.' That flipped a switch for me. Has anyone else tried using a personal memory as a prompt but changing the main person?

My old breakup story became my best sci-fi chapter.

It's a solid trick. Taking your own bad memory and giving it to a made up person creates instant distance. That distance lets you write the facts without getting stuck in your own feelings. You can focus on the scene and the action instead of the pain. The story becomes its own thing, not just a diary entry. It turns a blocked memory into usable material.
