Heard a workshop leader in Portland tell a room 'your prompt is doing too much work' and I finally got why my stories keep dying
I sat in on a free prompt writing session at a library in Portland about 3 weeks ago, and this guy running it said something that stuck with me. He said most writers cram three ideas into one prompt, so the prompt ends up doing all the heavy lifting and the story never has room to breathe. He pulled up a prompt someone wrote that had a detective, a haunted lighthouse, and a forgotten twin sister all in two sentences. Everyone laughed, but I looked at my own notebook and realized mine were just as packed. I counted 11 prompts I wrote this month and 9 of them had at least two separate conflicts fighting for space. Since then I've been writing single-idea prompts, like just 'a locksmith who can't open his own front door,' and the drafts come out way cleaner. Curious if anyone else has heard this same advice or if you think stacking ideas actually helps you brainstorm. What's the messiest prompt you've ever written that somehow still worked?
