Had to pick between a murder mystery or a fantasy romance prompt for a contest

I went with the murder mystery because I thought it'd be easier. Three paragraphs in, I'd killed off the wrong suspect and had to rewrite the whole thing from scratch. Has anyone else ever picked the wrong genre and regretted it instantly?

I mean, three paragraphs in is honestly pretty good for realizing the mistake. I once wrote like ten pages of a fantasy story before remembering I hate worldbuilding and had to scrap it all. Maybe it's just me but murder mysteries seem way harder to pull off without plot holes.

Man, you're totally right about the murder mystery thing. I used to think plotting a whodunit was straightforward, but then I tried writing one and had to scrap three chapters because I realized the killer's motive made zero sense. @miles_sanchez your point about worldbuilding really hit home for me actually. I always thought I'd enjoy building fantasy worlds but after reading your post I'm starting to think I'd hate it just as much as you do. Maybe simple stories with solid logic are harder than they look.
