A client in Austin told me my story's villain was 'too loud' and it clicked.

He meant the character's motivation was all angry shouting, with no quiet, scary moments to build tension. Anyone else get a note that totally reframed a character for them?

Okay but "too loud" is such a perfect way to put it. That quiet menace is way scarier than someone just yelling all the time. Makes me think of all the villains who just talk in a normal voice and it's terrifying.

Oh man, @riley_west, my friend's boss is exactly like that, just a quiet, cold voice that makes your blood run cold.

My editor said a character was "all bark, no bite." She was right. I rewrote his scenes so he'd just stare at people while they talked, then ask a quiet question that showed he'd been listening the whole time.
