Tuna casserole with crushed potato chips beats any fancy mac and cheese
I grew up eating my grandma's tuna casserole every Friday, and honestly it ruined mac and cheese for me forever. She used canned cream of mushroom soup, egg noodles, and a whole bag of crushed Lay's on top, baked at 375 for 25 minutes. Last month I tried a truffle mac at a bistro in Austin that cost $18 a plate, and I sat there wishing it had tuna and a crispy chip crust. The texture contrast is what does it, creamy on the inside and salty crunch on top, plus it feeds a family of four for under $8. Everyone I tell this to makes a face, but I've converted three coworkers so far. Has anyone else got a pantry-staple comfort food that beats restaurant versions?

My buddy Dave swore up and down that gourmet mac and cheese from this fancy place downtown was the best thing ever, so I dragged him over for my grandma's tuna casserole one Sunday. He ate two plates, then admitted the chip crust made him feel like a kid again, and now he texts me every time he makes it at home. He even tried adding bacon once, which was good, but he said it wasn't the same without the Lay's on top. I guess some things just stick with you, you know?
