The day my coworker put ketchup on a michelada

My buddy Dave brought a tray of micheladas to a backyard BBQ in Austin last summer. He was proud of the chamoy rim and everything. Then he grabs the ketchup and squeezes a glob into his glass. I watched him stir it in like it was normal. He said it adds sweetness and cuts the beer bite. I tried a sip and it tasted like a hangover and salad dressing mixed together. Where's the line between a creative twist and just ruining a cold beer? Anyone else seen a drink hack that crossed into crazy territory?

Read somewhere that ketchup in micheladas actually started as a hack from old school taquerias in northern Mexico where they'd run out of Clamato. They used ketchup mixed with lime and hot sauce to fake the same tang. But the difference is those places use like a teaspoon, not a whole squirt bottle situation. Dave turned his drink into a Bloody Mary with extra steps.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Ketchup in a michelada is actually a thing in some parts of Mexico, not just some random hack. It sounds weird but the vinegar and sweet in the ketchup balances the lime and salt just right if you do a small amount. Dave probably went too heavy with the squeeze but calling it a hangover and salad dressing mix is harsh. There's a reason Clamato and other tomato based mixes are standard, ketchup is just a thicker version of that idea.

3 years ago I tried a michelada with just a teaspoon of ketchup at a taqueria in Tucson and it actually worked, @sagew50. A full squeeze from a bottle like Dave did is way too much though, it overpowers everything.
