Spent $12 on a jar of pickled herring and my friends think I'm nuts

Grabbed it from the deli section on a whim last Tuesday. Just wanted something salty and weird. Ate it straight from the jar with some plain crackers. My roommate walked in and said it smelled like a bait shop. Honestly, the weird vinegar tang is the best part. Anyone else have a weird fish snack they can't quit?

Lmao that's a mood. I keep a jar of pickled mussels in the fridge and my partner side-eyes me every time I crack it open. The funkier the better honestly.

Okay but is the smell really that bad? I feel like pickled seafood gets a worse rap than it deserves.

Honestly it's part of a bigger thing where people act like any strong smell is a personal attack. Garlic, fish sauce, blue cheese, now pickled seafood. It's like we've decided all food should smell like nothing. The strong stuff is usually the most interesting, but we've been trained to think it's bad. My roommate nearly called the cops when I reheated leftover curry once, it's the same energy.
