My roommate thinks my late-night snack is a crime against food
I stand by cold baked beans straight from the can (Bush's Original, specifically) as the perfect 2 a.m. snack, while she swears you have to heat them up and put them on toast. The cold, sweet-savory mush is the whole point, it's like a weird pudding. Who else eats their comfort foods in a way that makes people side-eye you?

Cold beans from the can is a power move. I read a whole article once about people who eat canned food straight, like cold soup or ravioli. It's a texture thing. Your roommate is missing out on the convenience factor. Heating them up and making toast turns a snack into a whole project. The mush is the point.

You saying "the mush is the point" really got me. I used to be a total bean heater, thought it was gross otherwise. But last summer, I was moving stuff in the attic and found an old can of peaches. It was so hot up there, and that cold syrup was perfect. Now I get it. Cold canned pears hit different when you just need the thing, not the meal.

Got caught eating cold canned corn straight from the tin by my partner once, and the look of pure horror was worth it. There's something about that briny, metallic chill that hits the spot when you're just rummaging in the cupboard. Same with those little Vienna sausages, straight from the jar, no plate needed. Your roommate is overcomplicating a beautiful, lazy thing.
