My grandma finally convinced me to stop ruining mac and cheese with fancy cheese

She straight up told me my 'artisanal aged gouda and truffle oil' mac was an insult to the dish. For 30 years I thought Velveeta was trash, but she made me try her version last Thanksgiving. One box of noodles, half a block of Velveeta, some milk, and a pat of butter. I hated admitting she was right, but it actually tasted like home instead of a restaurant. I still use sharp cheddar sometimes on top, but the base is back to processed cheese now. Anyone else get humbled by an older relative's version of a comfort food?

Hold on, are people really getting this pressed about mac and cheese? It's noodles and cheese sauce, not a sacred ritual.

Actually it IS a sacred ritual in the South. You don't mess with Grandma's recipe.

Gotta agree with @julia_lee here, people get way too worked up over mac and cheese. Food snobs act like processed cheese is a crime but then cry about childhood nostalgia. Velveeta hits different when you just want comfort, not a cheese board.

And my aunt tried to lecture me about how I was making potato salad wrong because I added bacon. She brought over her "perfect" version with nothing but potatoes, mayo, and mustard and it was basically edible wallpaper paste. Some people just gotta learn the hard way.
