Old way versus new way for planning out quarterly content

I used to spend two weeks every quarter mapping out every single blog post and social update in a giant spreadsheet before the quarter even started. Then last year I tried a more flexible approach where I only plan out the first month and leave the rest open to react to trends and news. Which method do you find works better for keeping content on track without burning out on planning?

Oh man, my "meticulous" spreadsheet system was such a JOKE. I would spend hours color coding everything and then the first week of the quarter a breaking news story would make my whole plan obsolete and I'd just stare at my pretty chart feeling DUMB. Now I do a loose month out and it saves my sanity - I just keep a running doc of topic ideas I see in the wild and pick from that as I go. Burns way less time and my content actually feels relevant instead of forced.

Planning everything out ahead of time forces you to actually commit and follow through. That loose approach just lets you make excuses when things get hard.

Buddy of mine planned 3 months out, got sick week two, scrapped the whole thing.
