My pillar page strategy was wrong until I checked my analytics by month
I run content for a local HVAC client and spent 9 months building these massive pillar pages. Thousands of words, internal links everywhere. Traffic stayed flat the whole time. Then I pulled the data by month instead of by quarter and saw that one random blog post about thermostat quirks was getting 80% of the organic visits. Not the pillar pages. That post was 600 words and I almost didn't publish it. The pillar pages were targeting terms nobody searched for. The thermostat post answered a question people actually type into Google. Now I spend 2 hours a week mining the search console for those weird long-tail questions instead of planning big projects. Anyone else find that their best content is the stuff they almost cut?
Did a friend of mine have the same thing happen? He runs a blog for a plumbing company and his top page is literally just a list of weird noises a water heater can make. Two years of "real" content and that throwaway post still beats everything.
