I think the "content first" crowd is missing the point on SEO

Everyone keeps saying write for humans first and Google will figure it out later. I've been running a small blog about hiking gear for three years now and that advice has cost me months of lost traffic. Last April I wrote a really solid guide on waterproof boots, 2000 words, no keyword stuffing, real user experience. It got 47 visitors in two months. I rewrote it with a clear keyword structure, proper headings, and a table of contents and it got 1,200 visitors the next month. The content was basically the same. People act like SEO is some evil trick but really it's just making it easy for the search engine to understand what you wrote. Has anyone else seen their traffic tank after following that "write naturally" advice too strictly?

Is traffic really that big of a deal?

Hot take - most people just hate being stuck in their own thoughts more than the traffic itself.

Wait wait wait... 47 visitors from a well-written 2000 word guide?! That's insane. Like genuinely insane low numbers for something you put that much work into.
