Dropped $800 on a content audit and got 3 vague bullet points back

Last month I hired a freelancer to audit my blog's 200 posts. Thought it would find dead pages, broken links, outdated stats. Instead I got a doc that said 'improve meta descriptions' and 'refresh old content'. Thats what I paid for? Meanwhile my friend spent $400 on a different audit and it uncovered a whole cluster of cannibalized keywords that she was able to fix and double her organic traffic in 6 weeks. So is the price the problem or is it just a luck of the draw with who you hire? Has anyone found a way to vet content strategists before paying? I feel like I just burned my whole monthly budget on common sense.

Man, that stings. Same thing happened to me last year, paid $600 for a "technical audit" and got told to compress my images, which I already knew from a free plugin.
