A client told me my blog posts were too "fluffy"

I was writing 2000 word posts with lots of stories and padding. One client in Atlanta straight up said "I'm not paying for your personal anecdotes, I need actionable info." Now I keep most posts under 1000 words with a tl;dr at the top. Anyone else had feedback that made you totally rethink your writing style?

Nah, fluffy writing is what keeps people reading.

It sounds like that client did you a favor honestly... but I gotta ask - did you notice your reader engagement go up or down after you cut the fluff? That tl;dr trick is smart for sure, but part of me wonders if the people who actually read the full post are the ones who needed that extra context to take action. Just curious if the shorter format held their attention better or if you lost some of the folks who liked the storytelling angle.

Used to think fluffy was better. This changed my mind.
