Warning: my sister called my grocery budget 'fake math' and she was right
My sister sat down with me at my kitchen table in Boise two Sundays ago and went through my receipts line by line, and she flat out told me my $600 grocery budget was fake math. She pointed out I was leaving out the $80 to $100 I spent on quick runs to the corner store and coffee stops, so my real number was closer to $720 a month. I was mad at first because who wants to hear that, but she was right and I knew it. So for the past three weeks I've been pulling cash out every Friday, $150 for food and that's it, and when the cash is gone we eat whatever is in the pantry. Week one I ran out by Thursday and we had pancakes for dinner, but week three I actually finished with $22 left over. I hate that she was right about this. Has anyone else had a person in their life point out a hole in their budget like that, and did you actually stick with the fix or slip back into old habits?
Honestly your sister just sounds like she wanted to be right about something. Cash only is a fun trick for three weeks but real life has card payments and busy nights where you grab takeout, so I wouldnt beat myself up for "slipping." You saved money, thats what counts, the system doesnt have to be perfect.
