Warning: I bought into the 'cash envelope' system and lost $40 in a coffee shop last month.
The whole setup cost me about $60 for the fancy binder and labeled wallets... then I left the 'Food' envelope on a table. Has anyone found a simpler way to track cash that doesn't involve carrying it all around?

Okay, the "whole setup cost me about $60" is where it went wrong. That fancy binder is a huge part of the problem. The real cash envelope system is just that, plain envelopes from your desk drawer. You write "Groceries" on one and put the cash in it. The point is to SEE the money leaving, not to buy a special product. Carrying all the cash is still risky, but you don't need to spend money to save money.
