Tbh, I assumed budgeting meant deprivation, but it actually let me splurge guilt-free.

Budgeting just sets up rigid rules that make spending feel like a chore. When I tried it, I ended up skipping small joys like coffee out with friends because it wasn't in the plan. That guilt-free splurge never happened for me, since any extra expense felt like breaking the rules. For some of us, it's more freeing to have a general sense of finances without tracking every penny.

So @rileynelson, what's your actual system for that general sense?

My cousin swears by budgeting apps, but I lasted about three days before I felt like I was in financial jail. That coffee example hits home, because I'd stare at my budget and think "well, there goes my fun money for the week" over a five dollar latte. For me, just having a rough idea of what's in my checking account and what bills are coming up works way better. The guilt of going over some imaginary line totally ruins the little treats.
