My dad's envelope trick finally clicked, now I see where money goes
He told me for years to pull cash for groceries and gas weekly, but I thought it was old school. After watching $120 vanish in 3 days on card swipes in Nashville, I tried it for a month and my restaurant spending dropped by half. Anybody else find that seeing the bills leave your hand changes what you buy?
Noticed this same thing with my phone. I deleted the food apps off my home screen and suddenly I stopped ordering $30 of Thai food at 9pm. Having to actually search for the app made me think twice, which is the same thing as handling cash. The card makes everything feel fake, like it's not real money, just numbers on a screen. Once you add any kind of friction, whether it's bills in an envelope or apps buried two screens deep, your brain gets a second to ask if you really want it. Nashville will eat your wallet alive either way, so good on your dad for being right all along.
