Is it really a win to throw $200 at meal kits every month?

Ngl, I got sucked into those meal kit services during a busy season at work. For two months I was spending around $200 a month on HelloFresh thinking I was saving by not eating out. But then I actually added up the cost per serving compared to just buying groceries and planning my own meals. The meal kits were like double the price for smaller portions. Honestly, I feel like I wasted almost $400 before I realized it wasn't a budgeting win at all. Has anyone else done the math and found these kits are actually a rip off?

The HelloFresh boxes I got came with individual plastic wraps for each garlic clove and tiny soy sauce packets that could have just been a bottle. I started noticing that same wasteful logic showing up everywhere - buying pre-cut fruit in plastic containers, single serve snack packs, those individual coffee pods. Its like we pay extra to have someone package things in the most inefficient way possible and call it convenience. At some point you have to ask if saving 15 minutes of meal prep is worth the extra money and a trash can full of cardboard.

What about the insane amount of packaging waste they create?

Is that basically just paying extra to skip washing a dish?
