Finally figured out why my grocery budget was bleeding every month
I used to just grab whatever was on sale without a list and ended up with random stuff that didn't make meals, now I plan 4 dinners each week based on what I already have in the pantry and it cut my grocery bill from $120 to $85 a week. Anyone else have a moment where they realized their shopping method was the problem?

Oh my goodness, that frozen spinach story hits home. Did you find that changing how you shopped also changed what you actually wanted to cook, or were you mostly trying to use up what you already had?

Tbh this is exactly what happened to me. I was going to the store every other day just picking up stuff for whatever I was craving that night. My cart was full of random ingredients that never got used together so I was throwing away spoiled produce every week. Then I started checking my pantry and fridge first thing before making a list. It forced me to actually use what I had instead of buying duplicates of stuff I forgot about. Now I do two big trips a month instead of constant small runs and my bill dropped from $150 to around $100 easy. The biggest change was being honest about what I actually eat rather than buying stuff just because it looked good on sale.

A buddy of mine was in the same boat, spending like crazy at the store every week. He bragged once about his "system" of just buying whatever was on sale and figuring it out later. One time he came home with three bags of frozen spinach because it was buy one get one, but he already had two bags in the freezer he forgot about. They sat there for months until he finally threw them out during a deep clean. The moment it clicked for him was when he found a whole bag of shriveled limes he bought on a whim for some recipe he never made. Now he checks his fridge like a hawk before leaving the house.
