Vent: The hostel front desk guy in Austin told me to book direct, and I saved $214 on a 5 night stay
I was standing in line at a hostel on Congress Ave in Austin last month and the guy checking me in asked how I booked the room. I said through one of those big travel sites and he just kind of winced. He told me that if I call or email the hostel direct, they'll usually match or beat the online rate because they don't pay the 15 to 20 percent cut to the booking site. I tried it on my next trip to Tucson and the owner knocked $40 off 3 nights just for asking, said it was cheaper than paying the listing fees. Now I always pull up the hostel or motel on the map, find their number, and ask what their best direct rate is. It takes like 5 minutes and I've saved real money doing it. Has anyone else had a place say no to matching, or is this pretty much standard now?
