TIL my hostel booking habit was costing me way more than it should
A traveler in Lisbon told me I was booking too early and paying peak prices for dorms that drop by 20 euros a night a week before check-in. I waited on my next trip to Madrid and saved over 60 bucks on a 4-night stay. Do you guys book last minute too, or is that too risky?

Peak prices for a dorm bed, that's a new kind of sad. I guess the early bird gets the worm, but the last-minute bird gets the cheaper bunk.

Ever check the cancellation policy before you book? I only book places with free cancellation, then rebook if the price drops. Takes two minutes and saves a ton of cash.

Yeah, that's the only way to do it now. I got burned once by a non-refundable rate and never again. The peace of mind is worth it, even if the price is a few bucks higher. Lets you actually plan without feeling locked in. More places should just offer it as standard.
