Showerthought: the free walking tours in Lisbon saved me more than just money
I was in Lisbon for 5 days last month and my hostel was right off Rua Augusta. On day two I ran into a retired teacher named Paulo who was leading one of those free walking tours. He told me his rule for visitors: never book the first tour or the last tour of the day because those are when the guides are tired or rushed. I did two tours with him and the second one on day four was just me and a couple from Dublin, so it turned into a private walk. He pointed me to a lunch spot near the Miradouro da Graca where I got a full plate of grilled sardines, bread, and wine for 6 euros. Every guide we had also gave honest tips on which tram lines are packed with pickpockets and which ones are just as scenic and half empty. The real hack is tipping 10 to 15 euros at the end, because that guide will remember you and sometimes text you deals or free entry stuff the next day. Has anyone else had a tour guide basically become your local contact for a whole trip?
