Saved $60 on a hostel in Lisbon by booking direct after finding them on Hostelworld
Was planning a trip to Portugal last month and found this place called Home Hostel in Lisbon on Hostelworld. The booking fee was like $12 extra plus I think the hostel pays them a cut. So I just looked up their actual website and called them directly. Got the same bed for $18 a night instead of $20 and no service charge. Plus the guy on the phone threw in a free breakfast. Has anyone else tried cutting out the middleman for hostels?

Wait you got a free breakfast just by calling them? That's wild, I would've never thought to even ask.

Tbh I did something similar in Barcelona last summer. Found this spot called Yeah Hostel on Hostelworld but the fees were like $15 on top of the room price. I just Googled them and booked through their own site for $25 a night no extras. The best part was the cancellation policy was way more flexible when I booked direct. Hostelworld wanted to charge me if I canceled within 48 hours but the hostel itself said I could cancel same day for free. Pretty sure the hostels hate paying those commission fees too so they're usually happy to work with you. Saved like $30 total on a 4 night stay and got a free locker upgrade out of it.
