Overrated: 'Travel hacking' with credit card points is not worth the hassle

I tried the whole credit card points game for a trip to Lisbon last fall, signed up for two cards, tracked spending, did the math. Then I missed a payment by one day because of a banking glitch and they cancelled 15k miles. Ended up just booking a $400 flight on a budget airline anyway. Has anyone else had a points system screw them over worse than it helped?

Just booking direct is usually cheaper with fees anyway.
