Hostels are a waste of money and I'll die on this hill after 6 trips
Everyone in the Facebook groups screams that hostels save you cash, but I priced out a private hostel room in Lisbon last month at $68 a night when a basic hotel two blocks away was $74 with a real door and no 2am bunk squeaking, so what exactly are we saving here?
Wait, a private hostel room in Lisbon was $68 a night? That is shocking to me, because I always pictured hostels as the cheap backup plan when hotels are booked solid. If the private room costs almost the same as a real hotel, then the whole "save money" pitch only works if you are sharing a dorm with strangers. Sounds like the savings got smaller and the tradeoffs got bigger.
