Got stranded in Bar Harbor and a waitress gave me a $4 hack that split my whole hostel down the middle
Missed the last bus out of Bar Harbor last August and had to crash an extra night. Only place with a bed was this hostel charging $52 for a dorm spot. The waitress at this diner by the pier saw me stressing over the price and said just ask the front desk about their work trade, clean up the kitchen for 90 minutes in the morning and the night is free.
Here's the split. Half the people in the common room thought that was the smartest thing they ever heard and started asking every hostel they hit. The other half said it's a scam because you're basically working for room and board and it kills your morning. One guy said he'd rather pay the $52 and actually get to go see Acadia at sunrise instead of scrubbing pans.
So which is it? Is trading a couple hours of labor for a free bed a real travel hack or are we just convincing ourselves we're saving money while losing the whole point of the trip? What's your cutoff, like how many hours would you trade before you'd just pay up?
