Got hit with a 40 euro 'tourist tax' at a cafe in Rome and now I check menus before I sit down anywhere
I sat down at a place near the Pantheon two months ago and ordered one espresso, which cost 1.20 euros on the menu. When the bill came it was 41 euros, because sitting at a table triggered a service charge and a 'live music' fee even though no one was playing. I paid it, felt like a fool, and walked away mad. Now I always look for the tiny print that says 'al tavolo' versus standing at the bar, and I stand every single time. Does anyone know if other cities in Italy pull this same trick or is it just the ones packed with tourists?
The real scam is that "live music" fee, since plenty of places slap that on whether a guy with a guitar shows up or not. Smaller towns like Orvieto or Lucca pull the same table charge, but the locals know to stand so it never really hits them.
