My grandma's 1974 recipe box makes my phone's cooking app look useless
Found her handwritten card for beef stew last month, three ingredients and a note about using the cheap chuck roast from the A&P on 5th Street, and it turned out better than every 40-step recipe I've followed in the last 3 years, so has anyone else ditched the apps for a relative's index cards?

That line about "three ingredients and a note about using the cheap chuck roast" got me. It's like we've been taught that cooking has to be some big production, you know? Every app wants you to toast your own cumin seeds or make some fancy glaze from scratch. But my mom's old meatloaf recipe is literally ketchup, onion soup mix, and ground beef, and it's still the thing everyone begs for at family dinners. It makes me wonder if this whole "more steps means better" thing is just a way to sell us stuff. Same with repairing your own clothes or fixing a squeaky door, the old way is usually just simpler and it works fine. We've got all this information in our pockets, but sometimes the best answer is just the one that's been sitting in a drawer for fifty years.
