My dad told me my cooking was "fine but boring" and it stung for a week
I've been making the same chili recipe for like 5 years, just dumping in canned tomatoes and powder. He said it needed acid or something real like fresh garlic. Last Sunday I added a splash of apple cider vinegar and toasted my own cumin seeds. Holy cow it actually woke the whole pot up. Has anyone else had a family member drop a brutal truth bomb that fixed your go-to dish?

Honestly though, what's next, he's gonna tell me my cheese selection is "acceptable but uninspired" and suddenly I'm grating my own blocks instead of buying the bagged stuff? Ngl, I'm already side-eyeing my shredded cheddar like it personally offended me. Tbh, if your chili upgrade worked that well with just one tweak, dude was probably right but could've said it over a beer instead of making it sound like a performance review. Let me guess, next he'll critique your chopping technique and you'll end up with a sous vide setup by Tuesday.

Fine but boring" is a rough way to hear it, but your chili upgrade proves he wasn't wrong. Sometimes the blunt ones are the only ones who actually tell you what's missing.

Three cans of chipotle peppers in adobo? That's a whole different level of commitment. I'm sitting here trying to picture someone just casually using a whole can and thinking that's normal, not three. You basically turned your chili into a spicy science experiment. Did you even measure anything or just go by vibes at that point?
