My SSD died 2 hours before my final project was due, and I'm still not sure who to blame
So last Tuesday around 11pm I was putting the last touches on a 40 page final project that was due at midnight, and my laptop just froze, then hit a blue screen, then never booted again. I took it to the campus IT desk in the morning and the guy ran a quick check and said the drive was totally dead, no warning signs, nothing. I lost everything because my last cloud backup was from 3 weeks before, which is on me, but also why does a drive that's only 14 months old just die like that? I ended up getting a 2 day extension and retyped the whole thing from memory, which honestly was worse than the crash itself. Has anyone else had a drive go out with zero warning, or did I just get unlucky with this one?
Back in 2019 my roommate's drive died while she was watching a movie, no warning at all, just gone. Turns out some batches of certain brands just have bad controllers that fail early, so it is not always about age. Your extension thing sounds brutal though, retyping 40 pages from memory would wreck me.
