My $9 phone stand outlasted the $45 one from the mall

I bought a cheap plastic phone stand two years ago and a fancy metal one six months later, and the cheap one is still holding my phone while the $45 one snapped at the hinge last week, so tell me: is it the tech's fault for breaking or my fault for thinking price means quality?
