Hot take: my GPS app sent me 20 minutes out of the way, but I'm not sure I can even blame it
So I was driving to a job site in Sacramento last month and my phone's map app told me to take this weird loop through a neighborhood I'd never seen. I followed it like an idiot and ended up 20 minutes late because the app didn't know about a road closure that the city posted online 3 days earlier. My coworker says it's totally on me for not checking the local traffic site first, but I think if the app pulls live data it should catch that stuff. On the other hand, I've also ignored it and ended up in worse jams, so maybe I just need to double check both. Where do you all draw the line between trusting the tech and trusting your own brain?
Three days earlier? The city actually posted the closure online and the app still didn't pick it up? That blows my mind, because these apps are supposed to pull from exactly that kind of public data. I'd be annoyed too, but honestly the bigger shock is that a road can be closed for days and the map companies just don't bother. Makes you wonder how much of that "live traffic" info is really live.
